While there are a number of ZK alternatives (although none quite as mature or battle tested), I've found it can get pretty difficult to eschew the ZK requirement when using open source software.

Simply put, a large number of projects depend on Zookeeper (and not surprisingly large number of Apache projects like Hadoop, Kafka, Storm, Spark, Mesos).
