SOCKS proxies will get cut off after ~1h or so, you'll have a 'cool down' period of a few minutes, and then they'll come back. Presumably this is to irritate, or perhaps to have a chance to see which requests slip through during the disruption.

Have you tried obfsproxy? You can make a tunnel that looks like web/skype/etc traffic, it's worked well for us in China when we've needed it.
