Prior to significant computerization, a point was slightly smaller than 1/72 of an inch. Often 1/72.27 of an inch.
With computerization (particularly postscript but I think it has roots before that) it was redefined to 1/72 to take advantage of integer arithmetic.
These days publishing systems can still use a mixture of definitions.
