Smallest airports are hurting, even as more people than ever are flying (thepointsguy.com)

ITH airport is in bad trouble. Today it only has two airlines and all flights go to airports in the NYC area which: (1) has fierce competition from many bus carriers that will save you the trip from the airport to midtown if you want to go to NYC, (2) JFK and Newark are not my favorite for domestic connections, it was great flying to the west coast on Delta through Detroit or go to WDC, Research Triangle Park and such through PHL.

The silver lining is that SYR airport has greatly expanded and become highly competitive with multiple low cost and ultra-low cost carriers. I am thinking about taking a flight on Breeze just to ride on an A220 and figuring I can do something fun around Charleston, SC or some other random city. Trouble is there is no ground transport integrated with air service (like a bus that goes to the airport) and it is an hour long drive.

To what extent was this caused by the pilot shortage [1]?
