Anecdotally, my younger sister spent last year as a foreign exchange student in Modena (northern Italy). She explained that she's not surprised at all about the impressively quick spread there as nearly everyone she knew and interacted with greeted each other with two kisses on the cheek! I can't imagine how difficult it must be to contain a virus with such deep ingrained cultural norms.
