I'd consider both to the pinnacle of high scale engineering. Two transactional sites that handle intense numbers of users.

So yeah, I'd say they are the most successful sites on the planet if your success metric is scalability and uptime.



That's pretty specious reasoning though. Google, Wikipedia, and Youtube are the highest trafficked sites and I'd argue have a bit more visual cohesion.

Just because successful companies do a thing doesn't mean everything they do is a success.


Those sites try as hard to be the minimalist side, mind-you. There's not nearly as many views as on Amazon/FB.
