Seems like Apple has missed the point. I buy expensive devices for the ecosystem, and that ecosystem includes the routers (of which I have four in my house). I also bought the expensive devices because they would expand to meet my needs: my 2011 17" MBP came with 8GB RAM and now has 16GB. It now appears that Apple is the iPhone company. Someone has looked at the numbers and decided that everything else is tiny by comparison. Except its only tiny by comparison to iPhone.
