I buy from AliExpress and eBay not because of the shipping fee but because most of the time digikey/mouser doesn't sell hobbyist friendly form factors (like breakout boards) and some of this ic come in really tiny package (like tssop) which for an amateur are difficult to solder. Sometimes they need a resistor or a capacitor or a transistor easier to buy a board with everything on it that you stick to another board and that's it.
That, or they slap huge markups for these otherwise unpopular products.
Try to find a popular 16-bit ADS1115 ADC on digikey. They offer SMD 10X2QFN chip for $8, 10VSSOP for $10, assembled adafruit board for $22 (!!!) or DFRobot board for $15 (exact same board is half the price on ebay).
In comparison, ADS1115 boards from aliexpress are $2.
I started buying clothing from the brand itself (eg shoes directly from adidas, etc). Some appliances also direct. I sometimes buy food from Walmart but only if they are the retailer (they don't seem to commingle inventories). I bought some ssd directly from Samsung site. Another problem with amazon is the sheer quantity of not-counterfeit but cheap unknown knockoffs. It seems more like an expensive AliExpress.
I haven’t bought from Amazon in years. A few weeks ago my toddler left a rubber ball in our waffle maker and we didn’t realize it before turning it on and melting the thing. It ruined the non-stick coating.
After a bit of research I found a new waffle maker to buy. The place I found it had an Amazon affiliate link so I clicked through to price check — $94. Then I checked the manufacturer’s site — $69.99. Ordered it on Monday and it’ll get here tomorrow, free shipping.
This is a pretty common story for me. I almost always check Amazon out of curiosity and most of the time it’s more expensive then other options even when factoring in free shipping. I really don’t get what the upside is supposed to be.
So basically your answer tldr is "gig economy workers are dumb and financial/life decisions must be made for them in group and disregarding their particular situation and free will"
lol, for the people that parent describes, if the whole gig economy died, what kind of poor life decisions would they be making instead? What a ridiculous thought process to think the problem is the gig economy.
I'm from Norway and the economy is quite regulated. We're still/therefore (take your pick) very successful [1].
Macro economy is complicated. It seems obvious to me the it's not as simple as "just let everyone run free". On the other hand regulation has it's disadvantages as well. Complicated.
Measuring "regulation" isn't straightforward, but based on the Heritage Foundation's criteria, Norway has a relatively light load. It's basically on par with the US.[1] Its a very free economy by international standards. Venezuela is near the bottom of the list, just above North Korea.
Economic regulation and the extent of the social safety net can be quite independent of each other.
They put this ridiculous sign up bonuses, mass mail them and expect people not to take advantages of them. Want loyalty give better service and value and not the first 3 months only.
I think it's pretty obvious that Travis Kalanick should resign. He is the constant in all these stories supporting this nasty company culture. In the past year he has also been linked with Uber's shady business (attacks on press, fake income for drivers, etc) . He is the one pushing on borderline legal tactics. Even their business model is borderline legal (if anything). How he can deny knowing anything like the sexual harassment not happening ?
There was a time when founders were replaced too soon with "professional management". The pendulum has swung the other way with the mythology of the founder. Now, founders are rarely if ever replaced.
Pigeons and human have a pact. You continue and they will fly away in the last second. Cars don't need to stop for pigeons.

I hope you're kidding. In an area where they had just opened a freeway segment for my commute, my car had a couple of "reverse bird strikes" -- the car was safe but the fate of the bird was unknown -- at the beginning of the new segment. It's possible the birds weren't pigeons.
