This is partly true. Start-Up Chile makes a big effort to bring in speakers and mentors. That being said, Santiago isn't Silicon Valley, and Start-Up Chile doesn't have the network of a YCombinator or TechStars. I'll also say that outside of formal mentoring, there is a lot of value in the community of international entrepreneurs that take part.
I'm also participating in the current round and happy to answer questions. Start-Up Chile isn't for everyone, but it is an awesome opportunity if the fit is right and a great way to experience a new part of the world.
I picture a payments system on Facebook being geared to person-to-person payments and web payments, not in store, mobile payments. Need to pay back a friend for dinner, split the rent, pitch in for a co-workers gift? FB is a natural place. These type of payments could make people very used to paying with FB as well, potentially opening the door for use in more traditional payment scenarios. Year after year I've been surprised that nothing like this has emerged on FB.
The contact list, consumer trust, and appropriate context. A third-party developer offering this has the significant challenge of making users trust them with a payment. People know Facebook and (most) trust them. PayPal or Bump are options, but are distanced from social interactions. I'd be interested to see the usage numbers from younger consumers, as I also imagine (with no data to back me up) that not many teenagers or college students use PayPal. As for cash, again it's an option, but it's pretty clear the world is going plastic. There's a reason Square is a big deal.
Pandora's problem is that they are locked into paying royalties on every song they stream. So as their listenership and total ad market increases, so do their costs. So far they've managed to scale their profits with the rising costs, but that might not be possible in the future. From their S-1:
SoundExchange, has consistently established royalty rates that would, if paid by us, consume an unsustainable percentage of our revenue. If we are unable to reach a new agreement with SoundExchange for the period after 2015, our operating costs may significantly increase, which could harm our financial condition and inhibit the implementation of our business plan. Earbits instead makes new agreements with artists and labels which allow them to stream music without royalty costs in return for marketing the musician. The important difference is their focus on independent, and the fact that they aren't selling generic ads against the music.
This doesn't prove anything about the quality of a 'startup idea' It just proves that you are able to convince a small number of people to drop five bucks. I don't see how that has a correlation to the future success of a business.
This would be much more interesting if it were pitched as a way to build a group of active early adopters. Pledging to an idea should give the user some perks from the start, and you should make it easy for the companies collecting pledges to incentivize these users.
It'd also be cool to give the start-ups ideas of what kind of perks they could offer early adopters. I thought lunch with a founder was a fun idea, but I had trouble thinking of perks that were genuinely worthwhile and incentivizing.
I've got to admit, the board game idea for the ipad is pretty cool. In general, though, I'm not convinced I see the game market for the ipad being as large as it is on the iphone. A phone is in your pocket when you're on the bus, in the waiting room, or in the bathroom (you know you do it). These are perfect opportunities to pull out the device and play a game for a few minutes. I don't see people having as quick of access to the ipad or planning to bring it somewhere just to game on.
That being said, I'm guessing we can assume that the next flash sdk's ability to build for iPhone will extend to the iPad, in which case the games floodgates are going to open regardless.
