To be frank I think studies like this give some people an excuse. They become wrapped up in all the other factors beside calories (macro break down, genetics, hormone levels, GI, insulin spikes, meal timing, illness etc) yet ignore what is by far the biggest part of the pie (terrible pun, my apologies) - calories.

Yes, macro break down, thyroid issues, metabolism, illness, meal timing, GI, insulin spikes, hormone levels etc do make a difference. To grab at a generous figure lets say they make up 25% of the puzzle. With calories in VS calories out been 75%. And i think that 25% is very, very generous.

Stating calories in VS calories out is not true because of X, Y or Z is like building a house by starting with the doorbell. Before you lay the foundations. Fundamentals before details.

Back when i was in active addiction to heroin I knew that the brief time i spent messing with fent was the end of the road. The step past speedballs. At that point I wanted to, and was actively trying to, die. I understood its power.

To push this onto an unknowing general public is, imo, evil. These people should be sentenced like Heroin importers. Fent withdrawals, whilst short, are unadulterated hell. I have never felt a combination of physical, mental and spiritual pain like it and i have been through spinal fussion in my youth. The type of pain that changes a person for life.

As someone who is currently prescribed Fentanyl (for complex pain syndrome). The patches are very different to the product mentioned here, spay.

Not everyone on Fentanyl is an addict and it does have many valid use cases. I would argue that under prescribing pain meds is just as bad as over prescribing, maybe I should do an AMA from the other side of the fence..

Wasn't sure about doing this, but here goes!

They should be charged with at the least institutional and organized manslaughter. My area had 24 over dose deaths in one weekend due to fentinal in the heroin just this year.

I agree.

Can you define what an 'area' is for you? Thanks.

I live in a city of 120,000 and so my area is the metropolitan area which includes the suburbs. I think more drugs are consumed in the suburbs then in cities contrary to popular belief. Drugs cost money and there is certainly more money in the suburbs then in most rust belt cities.

Thank you for the clarification and illuminating link.

Probably a county or metropolitan area, this stuff has been happening all over the nation as of late in pretty drastic rates.

That's my guess as well. I am seeking to at least somewhat contextualize the probability.

I feel for you, addiction is hell... But it sounds like you're saying all fentanyl is bad.

Despite your experiences, it's a highly effective acute analgesic. Bad prescriptions should be fixed, sure, but making it unavailable would be much worse.

Does any one know what data source(s) MyFitnessPal barcode scanner uses?

UK is fairly comprehensive i know. Id assume the US is too.

Hi! I work for Lifesum, their competitor. We have a mostly crowd sourced barcode database connected to our food. That works pretty good actually and people are keen to adding food with correct values and connecting the barcode. Here in Europe products are usually added before they hit the shelves because users get them as samples or similar. I believe that we may have a bigger database than MyFitnessPal because they are very US centric while we have a user base spread out all over the world (including the US of course). Further on, if we presume our database is bigger than MyFitnessPal, we probably have the most complete food / barcode database in the world.

Thanks for the reply. You have a new Lifesum user.

I was under the assumption they used a combination of user submitted data and the USDA's food database.

I believe it is primarily user generated data.

Am I also a "lost cause"?

Echoing comments below, please watch your language. You are part of the reason people struggle to hold their hand up and ask for help.

Hear, hear.

Coming up to two years clean from an IV habbit. So, also a "lost cause."

I feel if people had the slightest idea just how many people around them are high on some kind of opiate, and how indiscriminate addiction really is that this type of language would be less prevalent.

Congrats on beating the gorilla.

On the Level feels like it was written for me (i know) It describes my current feelings about Lady Heroin after nearly 2 years clean. Perfectly.

RIP.

Slimfast and Complan off the top of my head. And those two have been around for decades. MyProtein sell simular stuff that is more balanced than whey protein + whole milk for a meal replacement. Also, whey + whole milk + instant oats lets you control the macros fairly well, assuming your getting all your micro-nutrients from real food elsewhere. And this is without looking on google. Id bet there are many many more. All the own-brand versions of slimfast for example.

I know those, and they don't match any of my criteria. Slimfast has no flavors that aren't dessert drinks.

For a 400 calorie serving of Slimfast original, it's over 36g sugars (vs 9g Soylent). Slimfast Advanced has almost no sugar, but is "sweetened with non-nutritive sweetener" (from their website). I can't find which actual sweetener it is, but most artificial sweeteners upset my stomach and taste more terrible than sweet.

Complan is also loaded with carbs, (33g sugar + 30g else) and has no fiber.

They're marketed as meal replacements, but I don't see how they're anything but vitamin enriched milk shakes.

The same one serving of Slimfast[1] has less than 10% of my daily calories, less than 2% of daily carbs, and between 35% and 110% of daily vitamins.

I don't see how it's a competitor to a drink (Soylent 2.0) that has exactly 20% of all macros and micros.

want fiber? Try an apple or if ringing a piece of fruit too difficult for you too.

Thats one hell of a boost to your TDEE. Im impressed.

I lift 5x, walk every where and swim LISS 3x a week. 173cm about 82kg. TDEE is ~3250 kcal. Currently shoot for 3500 a day. However, I only see my son on weekends. I bet my TDEE would be higher if had him every day.
