The US lays claim to all kinds of bullshit. But more to the point; different values, different laws - does it matter how centralized the control is? I would argue neither is “more” free, just free in different ways. US has a huge problem in equal access to the law, which undermines freedom no matter how good the laws are.

Some of those seem like good things TBH.

Yes, but they are incompatible with being on the forefront of AI.

The whole “guiding hand” of our government is done through the lense of job creation. Tax incentives. Protectionist trade policies. War. IP law. It all imperfectly comes down to job creation, because jobs are fucking important and necessary. Beware people who now come along and say “oh jobs aren’t that great” because they are warming you to accept a certain reality. That is to say, this essay is not just complete rubbish, it is dangerous rubbish.

> because jobs are fucking important and necessary

Why are they important and necessary, and for whom?

> I don't know if it's fair to require that needs to be unlocked

Sure it’s fair, and manufacturers could price accordingly. Legally enforceable is another story.

For peons sure. For anyone who is an actual security threat it would be easy. That is why this is either a) stupid or b) yet another lever to make it easier for this administration to incarcerate people.

> I draw the line at things that directly impact my net worth.

That is a really interesting admission upon which to evaluate your other comments here…

Sure. Why give a shit about anything really.

A few major failures will scare the risk mitigating bejesus out of some kinds of businesses, but maybe AI will be better than us at fixing those kinds of problems by then.

It is, but that isn't how it will be used. The problem isn't the tech, never was, it is how the greedy and stupid deploy it.

Hyperinflation is how it will impact most people. You will still have your job, at your pay, but a continually higher percentage of earnings will go to very few at the top.

How about instead we do "know your company" and consumers get intel about the ones doing the calls?
