Wechat is large enough to be able to negotiate requirements with Apple. They are the gateway to an entire continent and close to 2 Billion users. And since they are a 'everything app' the frequency of use and reliance is likely compounded.

Apple's not picking up the phone for 50 million users. So we shouldn't expect anything different here.

Luckily there are other phones and mobile os's to develop for.

They strategically use patterns that directly trigger the release of dopamine into the brain.

They've created algorithms that use slot machine like experiences that keep kids hooked to the screen.

These algorithms feeds users barely moderated content that feeds their worst instincts. With almost surgical precision when wanting to illicit engagement.

Then when research shows them the harm their causing they bury it, hire lobbyist, and double down.

Switch out a few words up there and you have the big tobacco playbook.

It's not just kids. My parents have spiraled in this way too. Why interact with each other when reels are more exciting? Why pursue friendships if you can experience it parasocially? This has been incredibly depressing, and it's a reason I make sure to value the people in my life. I have a lot of disgust for Meta and Google seeing what they've done to society broadly. Does it matter if the main difference is the OS? Chromebooks are way worse spec wise, and they’re still “phones with big screens” and a different OS. If someone made a windows laptop that was actually good without compromises in an ARM SoC, I’m sure it’d sell well too. The Qualcomm ones seem to have too many compromises today with the OS/driver layer unfortunately.

That last part is the stumbling block for sure - the Microsoft Surface Laptops are nice machines but damn if the driver thing doesn't continually piss me off.

You sound like you're not a home owner. In populated areas it could take a week to get a electrician or plumber out. And contractors are hard to find.

Don't get fixated on plumbing itself. The point is if a bunch of people rush into any profession it leads to wage depression. Unless the amount of plumbing needed increases, the overall amount of money flowing to the plumbing populace is likely to stay roughly the same.

Eventually. Wage depression does not happen linearly. You're asserting that demand is maxed out and there's no more money to go around, and that's just not true. A lot of people just don't bother because tradespeople are famously difficult to work with because they are so overbooked.

So there's no major update in the sense that you might be thinking. Most of the time there's not even an announcement when/if training cut offs are updated. It's just another byline.

I've actually started worrying that the amount of false data produced with LLMs on the public internet might provoke a situation where the knowledge cutoff becomes permanently (and silently) frozen. Like we can't trust data after 2025 because it will poison training data at scale, and models will only cover major events without capturing the finer details.

I agree. That's why you should write as much as you can now, if you want to get it into the LLMs (https://gwern.net/blog/2024/writing-online). You never know when the window will slam shut and LLM training goes 'hermetic' as they focus on 'civilization in a datacenter' where only extremely vetted whitelisted data gets included in the 'seed' and everything is reconstructed from scratch for the training value & safety.

Google would sooner turn off the feature than build some convoluted solution to protect a custom brand font. It's a problem that's not worth solving.

I can just as easily download them from any of the brand's official websites. The vast majority are being utilized via font-face and are rendering inside of heading and body text.

Convenient WOFF format, all weights, and available in 2 clicks in Dev Tools. And if Dev Tools is too difficult there are dozens of free extensions that will do it for you.

I'd argue that what little Google provides now is more secure than the official websites' usage.

The H2 enables lossless audio over wireless. So this reads like a temporary limitation that software might solve down the road. But knowing Apple's track record for enabling features in partially dormant hardware ... I wouldn't buy these expecting that.

Given Apple's very recent track record on promising things and then watching them vanish into the ether - not to mention a lifetime being burned buying into future promises that never materialize ("MCE is the future of the entertainment experience!" (RIP in Win7), "CableCARD will free you from the tyranny of locked down hardware!" (RIP from the get-go), "Unfolded Circle 3 will finally support serial from the dock!") - means I don't buy on what it could do tomorrow, but what's on offer out of the box from day one.

Could you point to where Apple claims that H2 enables lossless audio over wireless for the AirPods Max 2? I don’t see that claim on the spec sheet. What I see is this note:

“Ultra-low latency audio and Lossless Audio listening requires a wired USB‑C connection and compatible content from supported apps and services.”

So it doesn’t appear that lossless wireless is supported at all, even with Vision Pro.

I've been wearing Quiet Comforts for almost 15 years now during travel. I've flirted with the Sony XM line (music sound, call mic, UX are superior IMO) but always come back to Bose.

I see both of those lines as utilities for travel. Not sure why I can't shake that.

The Max's don't do anything particularly well. I work within the Apple ecosystem and the Airpod Max's plug seamlessly into it. So because of that they are my daily drivers.

I come from a barely middle class upbringing. Now that I'm raising my own kids and seeing the pressures of holiday gift giving and budgets there's two things I regret.

My parents could have done better things with that money. Excited to see what people can do with this combination (CD + 32x) today that Sega couldn't.
